The little town of guildwarsington used to be a calm and orderly. But one day a criminal mastermind came to town known as Gangsta Willy Carmine Anderson. The 3 fruity police officers were overwhelmed and almost completely stopped arresting criminals for many months. They nabbed a few now and then, but only the ones that were brought to their doorstep with blatant evidence and testimony of watchful citizens. They let murderers, thieves and criminals run rampant.
Good citizens of many years turned to a life of cheating and crime to stay affluent, competitive in sport or just make life easier. Many of their acquaintances were already involved in illicit activity and benefiting greatly from it. Some criminals hired many goons to do their dirty work for them (with a strange side effect of the government receiving lots of new money). The land became lawless.
The city officials finally after almost a year, realized they needed to do something. They hired new numbers and planned the greatest mass arrest operation in all of internetopia's history. The Law, strengthened by new numbers and a really big scythe, was able to arrest all of the criminals at once. For better or for worse, those that were caught shoplifting were given the same sentence as those who murdered 1000s of people - life.
The civilians who had the strength to resist as well as those that didn't do the dirty work themselves (but just used their goons, smart buggers), rejoiced as their town became safe again. But they glanced around and realized many of their neighbors, coworkers, even bosses were forever gone. The town used to be alive and prosperous. Now it was desolate and quiet.
Some of the jailed are planning their escape and will be successful. Many criminals will return, using either outdated or more sophisticated and undetectable methods. And the law enforcement in time will run dry as they move to a new town.
The townies rejoice now, but the crime will inevitably be back, and worse. There may not be any one left to move to the new guildwarsington being built a few miles away.
R.I.P.

What a waste of an already weak game. How can Anet ban players who had no other choice but to play the meta? Keep reading, dont start qqing already. Hear me out. Anet took MONTHS to fix a simple problem that other games fix upon release. A simple cheatshield or something would have stopped all .dll injections and stopped this huge incident. The funny part is the guy who created the bots claims he warned anet, he told them of how easy it was, he showed them examples and all he got was a "yah well take care of it thanks". Did they? No. So he decided i guess ill release it and see if Anet finally mans up to their short comings openly rather than avoiding all problems and admitting no fault. How is a player supposed to enjoy playing a game where bots run the economy and run the pvp? Are we supposed to just sit with our hands in our laps waiting for Anet to take action? They really think that banning these people for their short comings will solve anything? Havent we seen this before? *cough*mallyx glitch*cough*duping*cough*. They need to learn to control their servers and stop constantly creating glitches. The difference between then and now is that you could avoid and ignore those past events on the grounds of ohh its just the economy. But bots can farm nonstop for days. They can win Hall Of Heroes all night and all day without fear. They can perma rupt both monks in a gvg making it stupid easy to wipe any team. They LET bots overrun the game and they LOST most of their player base due to it. Blame the players and issue bans but they gotta know these people arent gonna be buying new account and for sure wont be buying guildwars2 accounts. They are just throwing away money now. Its a joke. ANet needs to fix this mistake before it costs them 75% of their prior player base.

Theres no mistake in banning botters, they abused the game and frustrated it for legitimate gamers.
I am definitely far more positive about buying Guild Wars 2 now.

All GW players HAVE the choice, and the majority DO NOT take the path you consider the only one possible. There IS a choice, and most take the correct one.

Only a few areas of the game are problematic at a time. GW usually eventually fixes them, and it's not like there isn't a lot of other stuff to do in between.
For the record: actions like these make me MORE confident in Anet regarding GW2. They are the acts of a game maker who cares about the same issues I do. I won't always agree with the choices Anet makes, but I do agree with about 90%.

Maybe it's just me, but I'd rather not have those cheaters around in GW2.

Three points:
1. For anyone wanting a definitive 100% cast-iron certain answer about TexMod, KSMod, and so on, you already have one. The definitive answer is "don't". They can't be completely unambiguous and say that they will never ban people for using these, because they just don't know that. Is it likely that they will? Nope. Would I feel safe using them? Yep. Are they retaining the right to change their mind? Yes, yes, yes. If you try to make them come out with a definite yes or no to the question of whether we can use them, they could only really say no.
2. There are likely a tiny minority of innocent people who got caught in the ban, because no detection method is perfect. These innocent people are probably spending their time communicating with Anet support trying to get to the bottom of the problem rather than raging and screaming on Guru.
3. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH AHAHA!!!

I don't think that would be fair botter or not, there are a lot of people that experiment with them just to see if they work. On top of the fact that banning current and past offenders does nothing to prevent new bots from arising. Guaranteed, this is not the end of the botting problem, people are too intuitive, and why not, they have been given no reason not to be.

Incorrect I believe,
My friend used a bot 3-4 years ago. with 55hp monk troll farm and those minotaurs in elona reach mission.
His account wasn't banned.
He gave me his account few months ago and still isn't banned ( he only has proph, so I just use his account to get 5year presents)
I believe they only ban recent botters. like 1-2years max.
It would be irrationally to punish someone for their acts committed 4 years ago in a game. (in this context, not a murder orsomething lol)

/fail.
Since when a horde of bots makes a place "alive"?
Also, I don't see the GW being more "desolate and quiet" than pre-ban, I logged in and saw the usual numbers of people around me, haven't seen banned guild mates or alliance mates.

Which ones? The ones who cheat and bot? ANd how is this bad?
I can say for sure that I will preorder GW2 (I was not considering even buying it given the state they left GW1).

I'm guessing all those players who didn't bot, and subsequently didn't face the wrath of the banscythe realized that there was indeed another choice. Kudos to them.

4000 people? No, no, no... almost 4000 accounts, probably far fewer people... one botter getting banned on eight accounts isn't 8 people. Out of how many currently active? No idea, you'd have to ask Anet... not that it matters, we're better off without the botters, population sized be damned.

They aren't exactly telling the truth ANet. Over the past 2 weeks ive been using texmod to get the cartography titles and ive been banned! Im sending a support ticket but if this is the case then im pretty sure their detection methods are whack.
Ive no idea whether ill get my account back now!
